[edit]From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰawᴬ¹ (“to burn (tr.)”), from Proto-Tai *prawᴬ (“to burn (tr.)”). Compare Middle Chinese 炮 (MC baew, “to roast; to burn”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨹᩮᩢᩣ, Khün ᨹᩮᩢᩣ, Isan เผา, Lao ເຜົາ (phao), Lü ᦕᧁ (ṗhaw), Tai Dam ꪹꪠꪱ (faw1), Tai Dón ꪹꪞꪱ (phaw1), Tai Daeng ꪹꪠꪱ (faw1), Shan ၽဝ် (phǎo), Tai Nüa ᥚᥝᥴ (pháw), Ahom 𑜇𑜧 (phaw), Southern Thai เพ่า, Zhuang byaeu.
