From Middle Chinese (MC ɕiᴇŋ, “sound”). Cognate with Lao ສຽງ (sīang), ᦵᦉᧂ (ṡeng), Shan သဵင် (seng1), Khmer សៀង (siĕng). Related to สำเนียง (sǎm-niiang).
