[edit]Base counterpart of ခွဲ (hkwai:, “to split; half”). STEDT gives no further etymology (kwɛ⁵⁵ "split up (bamboo pole)"), while Luce gives Old Chinese 夬 (OC *kʷraːds, “to split”) (which seems to be better reflected in modern Sino-Xenic via 決 (OC *kʷeːd, *qʰʷeːd, “to burst, break, determine”), which appears to be a derivative) as a cognate.[1]
The "mooring post" sense is treated as separate from the "separated" sense by MED and not mentioned by STEDT or Luce, though it is plausible that it derives from a semantic extension of the "separated" sense, as a "separating point" away from vast waters.
