Of uncertain origin. Formerly spelt တရုပ် (ta.rup), with earliest usage dating to the 1200s (Bagan era), during which it referred to the territory and a variety of peoples to the north and northeast of Burma. May be derived from 突厥, the Chinese term for "Turk;" 大理國, the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom; or 大月支 or 大月氏, a Chinese term referring to Mongol-speaking Kushan Huns.
