[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *b/m-laŋ, Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b/m-laŋ (penis; male; husband). Cognate with the second syllable of Jingpho [script needed] (ne³¹ laŋ³³, penis), Old Chinese (OC *klaːŋ, “bull, stud”); the relation and comparison (OC *raːŋ, “husband, young man”), though striking, has been disputed (see there for more) (STEDT).

The "complete" sense is grouped etymologically with the "husband" sense by MED, and isn't mentioned by STEDT or Luce 1981. It is unclear whether the two senses are truly related.
