Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Kartvelian *ḳalmax- ‎(fish).[1][2] Cognate with Georgian კალმახი ‎(ḳalmaxi) and Svan კალმახ ‎(ḳalmax), კალმა̈ხ ‎(ḳalmäx), კალმახუ̂ ‎(ḳalmaxû).

On the other hand, Marr derives from Armenian կարմրախայտ ‎(karmraxayt).[3] Mentioning Marr's proposal, Ačaṙean remarks that the Armenian word is attested already in Grigor Magistros.[4]
