Etymology[edit]

Akin to Byzantine Greek κάττα (kátta). According to Ačaṙean, from Armenian կատու (katu, cat).

In contrast, according to Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani („ლექსიკონი ქართული“/„სიტყვის კონა“, 1685–1716), კატა is a borrowing from European ("ფრანგული") languages, a synonym of Georgian ციცა (cica).
