Georgian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Russian космона́вт (kosmonávt), itself coined from Ancient Greek κόσμος (kósmos, universe) + ναύτης (naútēs, sailor).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /kʼosmonavtʼi/, [kʼosmonaftʼi]
  • Hyphenation: კოს‧მო‧ნავ‧ტი

Noun[edit]

კოსმონავტი (ḳosmonavṭi) (plural კოსმონავტები)

  1. cosmonaut

Usage notes[edit]

This Russian-derived term is mostly used within the context of the Soviet and Eastern Bloc space programs. In modern Georgian it still remains in active use, but has gradually lost popularity to English-derived astronaut.
