Etymology[edit]

From Old Georgian ცხოველი ‎(cxoveli), ცხოელი ‎(cxoeli), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *с₁xow-el-, from *c₁xow- (whence also ცხვარი ‎(cxvari), ცხოვრება ‎(cxovreba)). Cognate with Mingrelian ჩხოუ ‎(čxou, cow) and Laz მჩხური ‎(mčxuri, sheep); see below for more.
