Etymology[edit]

From Old Georgian ცხოველი (cxoveli), ცხოელი (cxoeli), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *с₁xow-el-, from *c₁xow- (whence also ცხვარი (cxvari), ცხოვრება (cxovreba)). Cognate with Mingrelian ჩხოუ (čxou, cow) and Laz მჩხური (mčxuri, sheep); see below for more.
