[edit]Letter
[edit]ᩅ (va)
- The 37th letter and 29th consonant of the Tai Tham Pali alphabet. In Pali it represents the voiced, labiodental fricative (or approximant) consonant /v/.
Usage notes
[edit]In the modern vernaculars, in the syllable onset the letter represents the consonant variously described as /v/, /ʋ/ or /w/. As a final consonant, it represents /w/ (which may be treated as an allophone of the foregoing) or as a vowel element <wiki>[u]</nowiki>. Analyses vary. The final consonant may sometimes be written superscript, in which case it is encoded as U+1A74 TIA THAM SIGN MAI KANG ᩴ, for no contrast has been established. (Indeed, the use of the latter as a pure vowel mark may itself have originated as the use of a superscript form of this letter.)
This letter may also be used as mater lectionis in the modern vernaculars; it is usually written subscript in these case, but crowding may cause it to be written unsubscripted.
