Borrowed from Malay puak (tribe, clan; faction), from Thai พวก (pûuak, group, party), from Angkorian Old Khmer vvak, vvāk, vok, bok (to come together; to assemble; to congregate; group; company; gathering; assemblage) (Modern Khmer ពួក (puək)), which is from Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer vok (ibid.).
