[edit]Borrowed from Malay puak (“tribe, clan; faction”), from Thai พวก (pûuak, “group, party”), from Angkorian Old Khmer vvak, vvāk, vok, bok (“to come together; to assemble; to congregate; group; company; gathering; assemblage”) (Modern Khmer ពួក (puək)), which is from Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer vok (“ibid.”).
