Etymology

From ἀ- (a-, “not”) +‎ λήθω (lḗthō, “hide, forget”), variant of λανθάνω (lanthánō, “to do secretly”), +‎ -ής (-ḗs, adjective suffix): literally, "unconcealed" or "not forgotten".

3. (neuter accusative plural, ἀληθῆ, in answer to a question) that's right
   • 366 BCE – 348 BCE, Plato, Theaetetus 143a:

     Εὐκλείδης   […] ὥστε μοι σχεδόν τι πᾶς ὁ λόγος γέγραπται.
     Τερψίων   ἀληθῆ· ἤκουσά σου καὶ πρότερον […] .

     Eukleídēs   […] hṓste moi skhedón ti pâs ho lógos gégraptai.
     Terpsíōn   alēthê; ḗkousá sou kaì próteron […] .

     Eucleides: So I have pretty much the whole conversation written down.
     Terpsion: That's right. I've heard you [say so] before.
