[edit]Borrowed from Latin Ariovistus, either from a Proto-Germanic compound involving *harjaz (“army”) or *arjaz (“esteemed”), or from a Proto-Celtic compound involving *aryos (“nobleman”) (compare Old Irish aire). See Ariovistus § Etymology at Wikipedia for more.
