Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁el-nó-s, from *h₁el- (deer). Compare ἔλαφος (élaphos, red deer), Lithuanian elnias (deer, stag, hart), Russian оле́нь (olénʹ, deer), Russian лось (losʹ, elk), Old Armenian եղն (ełn, hind).
