Uncertain origin; usually linked to ἕρμα (hérma, “heap of stones”), itself of non-Indo-European substrate origin or from Proto-Indo-European *ser- (“to bind, put together”). Beekes instead suggests a Lua error in Module:parameters at line 159: Parameter 2 should be a valid language, etymology language or family code; the value pregrc is not valid.
