Etymology

From an earlier *σϝᾱλιξ (*swālix), from Proto-Indo-European *sweh₂-lik- (“as old”), from *swé (“self”) and perhaps *h₂el- (“to grow”) + the same suffix found in ἡλῐ́κος (hēlíkos, “as big as”). For the semantics, compare ἔτης (étēs, “clansman, private person”), Sanskrit स्वक (svaka, “relative, friend”), and Latin sodālis (“companion, comrade”). See also Latin aequālis (“equal”).
