Ancient Greek

Etymology

[edit]

Unknown; the traditional connection with Sanskrit व्याघ्र (vyāghrá, tiger) (based on a shared semantic connection of warm color) is morphologically unconvincing. Wackernagel hesitatingly supposed that a neuter ὦχρος (ôkhros) replaced an older *ὦχος (*ôkhos), like αἶσχος (aîskhos) to αἰσχρός (aiskhrós) and ψῦχος (psûkhos) to ψυχρός (psukhrós).[1]
