From Old Japanese. Attested in the Kojiki of 712 with the spelling 摩賀.[1]

Cognate with 曲がる (magaru, to bend, intransitive).[1][2]

      The names of the born gods were Yaso₁-maga-tu-pi₁-no₂-kami₂, then Opo₂-maga-tu-pi₁-no₂-kami₂.
      maga is the reading of 禍.
