Etymology[edit]

Compound of パンツ (pantsu, “underpants”) + 一丁(いっちょう) (itchō, “one piece”), the latter portion in turn from 一(いち) (ichi, “one”) + 丁(ちょう) (chō, counter). Compare 一丁(いっちょう) (itchō, “(try) one time”, adverb).
