Attested in the Nihon Shoki (720 CE).

Derived from 八つ (yatsu, eight) + (-ra, pluralizing suffix) + (mai, dancing). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)

The 八佾 spelling is jukujikun (熟字訓), borrowed from Chinese.
