Etymology[edit]

Appears to be a coinage in Japanese from components derived from Middle Chinese, as a compound of (ki, return) +‎ (ra, clipping of dated term 羅府 (Rafu, Los Angeles)).

Date of first appearance uncertain, but likely some time after the 1894 coinage of 羅府 (Rafu).
