Etymology
[edit]From English rupee, from Hindi रुपीया (rupīyā), variant of रुपया (rupyā) or Urdu رپیا (rupayā), coined by Mughal emperor Sher Shah Suri (1540–45), from Sanskrit रूप्यक (rūpyaka, “silver coin”), from रूप्य (rūpya, “wrought silver”).
