Etymology
From 足 (ashi, “foot”) + の (no, possessive particle) + 裏 (ura, “backside, underside, inner side”).[1] Contrasts with 足の甲 (ashi no kō, “the top of the foot, the instep”).
Compare 手の裏 (te no ura, “palm of the hand”), contrasting with 手の甲 (te no kō, “back of the hand”).
