From the names of the 4 kinds of prefectures:
- Tokyo is suffixed with 都 (to, “capital city”)
- Hokkaido is the only known 道 (dō, “circuit”)
- Kyoto and Osaka are suffixed with 府 (fu, literally “subdivision”)
- The remaining 43 prefectures are suffixed with 県 (-ken, literally “county”)
