Etymology[edit]
Compound of 鳥 (tori, “bird”) + 黐 (mochi, “birdlime, a glue-like substance used to trap birds and other small animals”).[1][2][3][4]
Birdlime was originally called just 黐 (mochi), which term is still in use. To disambiguate, the more specific term 鳥取黐 (tori tori mochi, literally “bird catching mochi”) arose in roughly the Kamakura Period, shortening later in roughly the Muromachi Period to just 鳥黐 (torimochi).[5]
