Etymology
Compound of 鶯 (uguisu, “Japanese bush warbler”) + 張り (hari, “stretching”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of verb 張る haru, "to stretch"), from the way that the floor creaks upon pressure. The hari changes to bari as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
