Etymology[edit]

개굴 (gaegul, croak, onomatopoeia) +‎ (-i, noun-deriving suffix).

First attested in the Sinjeung yuhap (新增類合 / 신증유합), 1576, as Middle Korean 개고리 (Yale: kaykwoli).
