Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 길〯다〮 (Yale: kǐl-tá), from Old Korean (*kil-), an element that apparently means “long” in certain first-millennium Korean place names.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈki(ː)ɭda̠]
    • (file)
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescriptive in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
