First attested in the Gugeupbang eonhae (救急方諺解 / 구급방언해), 1466, as Middle Korean ᄃᆞᆯᄀᆡ앓 (Yale: tolk-oy-alh).

Equivalent to (dak, fowl, hen) +‎ (-ui, ’s) +‎ (al, egg).
