First recorded in the Nammyeongjip eonhae, 1482, as 쇠야미 (soeyami), thereinafter changing in form to 쇠야기 (soeyagi).
Pronunciation
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈs͈wɛ(ː)ɡi] ~ [ˈs͈we̞(ː)ɡi]
- Phonetic hangul: [쐐(ː)기/쒜(ː)기]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
