First attested in the Gugeupbang eonhae (救急方諺解 / 구급방언해), 1466, as Middle Korean 외〯 (Yale: wǒy).

Possibly cognate with Japanese (uri, gourd, squash, melon); compare other terms in the Japonic family, such as Kikai (ui) and Yoron (ui).
