Etymology[edit]

Calque of Chinese 玉蜀黍, from (, ok, “jade”) + 수수 (susu, “sorghum”). First attested in the Yeogeo yuhae (譯語類解 / 역어유해), 1690, as Early Modern Korean 옥슈슈 (Yale: oksyusyu).
