Gothic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *wrฤ“รพuz (โ€œherdโ€). Cognate to Old English wrวฃรพ (โ€œbandโ€) and Old Danish vrฤth (โ€œherd of swineโ€). The -i- in the Gothic descendant (which is attested only once, possibly indicating a spelling error) is unexpected; one would expect a Gothic form *๐…๐‚๐Œด๐Œธ๐Œฟ๐ƒ (*wrฤ“รพus) based on its cognates.
