Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂iHseh₂, *h₃iHseh₂ (shaft). Cognates include Ancient Greek οἴαξ (oíax, handle of rudder, tiller, helm;), οἰήϊον (oiḗïon, handle of rudder) and Sanskrit ईषा (īṣā́, pole or shafts of a carriage or plough).
