Ultimately from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀺𑀢𑁆𑀢 (mitta), from Sanskrit मित्र (mitra); probably + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀉𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-ulla-), which is an adjectival suffix or denotes an actor.
