Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Probably from the Proto-Indo-European *-sti- suffix, whence also Old Church Slavonic -ость (-ostĭ) (Russian -ость (-ostʹ)) and Hittite [script?] (-ašti). The ending *-i in Proto-Indo-European is the reason of the irregular genitive of some older words derived from this suffix, e.g. գալուստ (galust) : գալստեան (galstean), հանգիստ (hangist) : հանգստեան (hangstean).
