Etymology

-s (adjective-forming suffix) +‎ -ő (adjective-forming suffix). The parts cohered in the Ancient Hungarian period.

Suffix

-ső

1. (adjective-forming suffix) Added to a noun or a stem to form an adjective.

   első (“first”)

   vég (“end”) → végső (“final”)

   mell (“chest”) → mellső (“front, for limbs”)

Usage notes

• (adjective-forming suffix) Harmonic variants:

  -só is added to back vowel words

  -ső is added to front vowel words

• The superlative form of the produced adjective is leg-…-ső. The usual -bb suffix is added only in exceptional cases:

  első - elsőbb - legelső - legeslegelső
