From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *teḱs-, *teḱ- (to weave, braid, add, establish, construct). Cognate with Latin texō (weave, braid, build, compose), Ancient Greek τίκτω (tíktō), τέχνη (tékhnē), τέκτων (téktōn).
