Arabic
Etymology
Related to Aramaic ליד (lyd, “under control of, next to”) and Jewish Babylonian Aramaic לידי (lydy, “into one's possession, into a state of, towards”). Developed parallel with لَدُن (ladun), derived from a contraction of لَ (la, “to, for; at”) + يَدَا (yadā, “hand”); at hand. Hence rendering the sense, to be right before them, to be in their presence, immediately at their person, nearly occupying the same location, as close as one can get.
