From Middle Chinese (MC syeng, “sound”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈ᩠ᨿᨦ, Lao ສຽງ (sīang), ᦵᦉᧂ (ṡeng), Tai Dam ꪎꪸꪉ, Shan သဵင် (sǎeng), Tai Nüa ᥔᥥᥒᥴ (séng), Ahom 𑜏𑜢𑜂𑜫 (siṅ).
