Etymology

From essaim (swarm) +‎ -er. Cf. older échemer. Less likely from Vulgar Latin exāminō, exāmināre, from Latin exāmen. Compare Italian sciamare, Catalan eixamar, Spanish enjambrar, Portuguese enxamear.
