From Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱs-. Cognate with Sanskrit अक्ष (akṣa, “axle, axis, balance beam”), Mycenaean Greek 𐀀𐀒𐀰𐀚 (a-ko-so-ne) and Latin axis.
