Etymology

From Middle High German kobe (shed, sty) (modern Koben) + *holt (goblin), from hold (friendly, gracious), a euphemistic way of referring to the mischievous beings, from Proto-Germanic *hulþaz (inclined, favorable). Related to Dutch kabouter.
