Etymology

From fore- +‎ ground. Compare Dutch voorgrond (foreground), German Vordergrund (foreground), Danish forgrund (foreground), Swedish förgrund (foreground), Norwegian forgrunn (foreground), Icelandic forgrunni (foreground).
