Etymology

From a Vulgar Latin *suflitus, from Latin sufflō, from flō (to breathe), or from an alteration or suffix change of sufflātus. Compare Latin the meaning of animus, anima ("soul, also breath") deriving from the Proto-Indo-European root for "to breathe", and cf. also Latin spiritus (spirit), from spirō (breathe).
