Inherited from Proto-Slavic *rỳsь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *lū́ˀśis, from Proto-Indo-European *lewk- (bright, to shine), whence English lynx and German Luchs. Baltic cognates include Latvian lūsis, Lithuanian lūšis and Old Prussian luysis.
