From Proto-Vietic *ɗeːp (glutinous (rice)). Cognate with Muong Bi đếp, Proto-Katuic *ɗeep (whence Pacoh deip (glutinous rice)). Compare Khmer ដំណើប (dɑmnaəp, glutinous (rice)).
