From Late Latin Agustus, from Latin augustus (month of August), from the agnomen Augustus (venerable) of Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus, probably from Latin augeō (to increase), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewg-, whence also the adjective augsts.
