From Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewg-. Cognates include Proto-Germanic *aukaną, Ancient Greek αὐξάνω (auksanō), Lithuanian áugti, and, via Iranian, Old Armenian վաշխ (vašx). Akin to English eke.
